Once a small fishing village Akbuk, only 15km from Didim and on the way to Bodrum airport, is a place where Turkish traditions are still a part of daily life, thus enabling this small town to be such a beautiful place in which to live.
A backdrop of tree-covered mountains and forests which slope down towards the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea creates a magical setting of tranquility. Akbuk, set within a calm-watered bay is a safe place for all the family to enjoy. There are local restaurants to cater to everyone’s taste.
Whether you enjoy traditional Turkish food such as pide (Turkish pizza) kebab, or perhaps kofte (meat balls) or even western cuisine, the choice is there. The fishermen on the west side of the bay provide a stunning variety of fresh fish, and in such vast abundance. These restaurants will cater, most graciously, for those who prefer a more British flavour to their food. There are also a small number of British restaurants to choose from.
For nightlife, Akbuk features many bars, which are all set along the main Akbuk beach road. Here one can relax and enjoy the sounds of a live band playing traditional Turkish folk music. For those of you who prefer to dance the night away, there are a handful of nightclubs that are open till the early hours of the morning.
If shopping is something high on your agenda, then Friday in Akbuk is market day. The market is fairly large, with the local farmers selling fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and yogurt.
There are also many cloths stalls and places to buy household items, such as cups and saucers pots and pans, as well as fabric stalls which have a large selection of net curtains and bed linen.
For those of you who are green fingered there are many gardens stalls selling a variety of different plants. Roses, fuchsias, olive trees, grapevines and bedding plants are all available Haggling is part of life here in Turkey, and it makes it a fun day trying to get a bargain or two.
The town centre in Akbuk is very self-contained, and for day to day living the local shops can provide you with most things. There are many markets (mini supermarkets) selling most essential items, there is also a chemist, a hairdressers, many electrical stores, hardware shops, an internet café and plumbers.
There is also 25 hour medical support available from local doctors, a post office and even an ATM cash point machine. Therefore, other than the large supermarkets, there everything here you can possibly require.
Akbuk has a small harbour where the local fishing boats dock after arduous day at sea. There many beaches all around the bay, with sun lounges and shade umbrellas readily have a small café or bar selling drinks, ice cream and snack.
The beaches here are a lot quieter than those in the main resorts. They also offer a clean tidy and picturesque vista as you look out towards the bay and the surrounding mountains.
The people of Turkey are warm and friendly, indeed, hospitality is so much a part of Turkish life you should not be too surprised if you are invited in for a drink or dinner. The Turkish community always do their best to make you feel that you are part of the family.
Akbuk is a truly magical place that once visited is hard to leave. Still in touching distance of the main resort of Altinkum, but far enough away to experience Turkey for what it is a place of beauty, charm, calm and wonder.
It is truly a secret paradise hidden in the Aegean Sea. Not only will you leave a footprint in the sand but Akbuk will leave a print in your heart.
